The tathāgatagarbha is the designation for the intrinsically pure mind when it is enclosed in defilements. The Buddha states that although there is no self in the skandhas, dhātus, and āyatanas, there is the tathāgatagarbha, which can receive wholesome and unwholesome causes and thus can broadly produce the saṃsāric phenomena of the six destinies. For example, just as a magician, relying on spells, conjures the physical forms of the six destinies, which are free from self and what belongs to a self; so too ordinary people rely on the tathāgatagarbha to give rise to the saṃsāra of the six destinies, which is likewise free from self and what belongs to a self.
