Or the basis is precisely the tathatā of consciousness-only, because it is the basis of saṃsāra and nirvāṇa. Foolish people, being inverted, are confused about this tathatā, and thus from beginningless time undergo the suffering of saṃsāra; noble ones, free from inversion, awaken to this tathatā, and immediately attain the ultimate peace and bliss of nirvāṇa. That is, by repeatedly cultivating non-discriminating wisdom, one severs the two heavinesses in the root consciousness, and thus is able to transform and extinguish saṃsāra which relies on tathatā, and transform and realize nirvāṇa which relies on tathatā.' Therefore it says: 'And freeing oneself from wisdom and the knowable, / Transformation of the basis is liberation.'
