9.149

The prior six evolving consciousnesses differ in kind according to the six faculties and objects; that is, they are named eye-consciousness up to mental consciousness (names established according to the faculties), or they are named form-consciousness up to phenomenon-consciousness (names established according to the objects). That is to say, discerning with respect to the six objects is named consciousness. However, this establishment of the names of the six consciousnesses according to the objects is stated based on the five physical faculties prior to attaining mastery. If one attains mastery, the faculties are mutually functional: a single faculty generates consciousness that discerns all objects, and one can only establish names according to the faculties without confusion.
