The Tathāgata was expounding the Dharma in the palace of the king of yakṣas. The various yakṣas and others thought that the time to eat was about to arrive, and they ate nothing but meat; wishing to cause the yakṣas to give rise to a compassionate mind, [Mahāmati] requested the Tathāgata to expound the merits and faults of eating and not eating meat. This is the mind of all Buddhas in the assembly; the Buddha's mind is loving-kindness and compassion.
