2.39

問：目連自定光佛世已來，所生之母不一，如何偏救彼之青提？答：青提與目連緣深，今生復為其母。但救此身所生之母，非謂救彼遠世青提。餘論云云，皆為未達。

Question: Since the time of Dīpaṅkara Buddha, Maudgalyāyana's mothers through various lives were not one and the same; why did he rescue only that Qingti? Answer: Qingti had deep affinities with Maudgalyāyana, and became his mother again in this lifetime. He was merely rescuing the mother who gave birth to him in this life, not rescuing that Qingti of distant lifetimes. Other treatises' claims are all due to a lack of understanding.
