若學者雖在師左右，而其意染邪，必不成道，何者？其要在聞而行之。雖常近師而不能修習，無益於萬分之一也。

If a student, though attending upon the master's left and right, has a mind tainted by the deviant, he will surely not accomplish the Way. Why is this? The crucial thing lies in hearing and putting it into practice. Though constantly near the master, if one cannot cultivate and practice, there is not a ten-thousandth part of benefit.
