According to the Five-Part Vinaya: the Buddha Śākyamuni was born into a kṣatriya family in the city of Kapilavastu in central India. His father was named King Śuddhodana, and his mother was called Māyā. He was born from her right side, with the color of refined purple gold. He did not succeed to the royal throne, but at nineteen vaulted the city [walls] and went into the Snowy Mountains, undergoing ascetic practices for six years, eating a single grain of hemp and wheat each day. He then went to Mount Gayāśīrṣa and studied the samādhi of nothingness; after three years, knowing it to be wrong, he abandoned it. He further went to Udraka [Rāmaputra] and studied the samādhi of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; after three years, knowing it to be wrong, he likewise abandoned it. Thereupon, receiving and practicing [the Dharma] with a mind devoid of mentation, he utterly crushed and subdued all non-Buddhists. The Bhagavat was thirty years of age at that time, and on the eighth day of the second month, when the morning star appeared, he attained complete and perfect awakening (samyaksaṃbodhi). In Mṛgadāva, he delivered the five men including Kauṇḍinya, which was the beginning of the arising of the teaching.
