Now, the ultimate truth does not govern, yet how could it be separated from sentient beings? The multitude of moving creatures are without illumination, naturally deluded regarding samyaksaṃbodhi. Therefore, the compassionate Supreme Sage expounded the marvelous gateway of taking refuge and salvation, receiving beings and benefiting life, preaching the teaching according to capacities, spreading the cloud of Dharma to moisten things, raising the torch of wisdom to illumine the darkness, manifesting words beyond words, and speaking the speech that is without exposition. The Sūtra in Forty-two Sections consists of the admonitions and instructions of the Capable and Benevolent One. Ever since the transmission and translation by Mātanga and Dharmaratna, it has circulated throughout China. During my leisure from state affairs, I have quietly perused it, hoping to assist in the duty of its propagation; hence I composed the words of this commentary. New moons and dark moons have repeatedly turned, and the manuscript was soon completed. In guiding the ears and eyes of the common folk, though I am ashamed of its lack of profundity, as a snare and fish trap to aid all good deeds, I hope it matches their benefit. Where there were doubts and errors transmitted over time, or clumsy sentences difficult to distinguish, I have also clarified them, in the hope of achieving fluent expression. I have roughly written this at the beginning of the text to express my sincere feelings.
