Fifth, regarding the complete teaching: it clarifies that one stage is directly all stages, and all stages are directly one stage; therefore, the fulfillment of the mind in the ten faiths directly encompasses the five stages and accomplishes correct enlightenment, and so forth. Because host and companion are completely fulfilled, it is named the complete teaching—that is, the Huayan Sūtra. What it expounds is exclusively the inexhaustible dharmadhātu, wherein the ocean of nature is completely fused and pratītyasamutpāda is unimpeded, like the inexhaustible layers of the jewels in Indra's net. Having understood that the five teachings run through all expositions, it is not yet known how this sūtra and those [teachings] encompass each other. Now, to reveal this meaning, it is divided into three sections: 1. That fully encompasses this, while this partially encompasses that—meaning the complete teaching; 2. This partially encompasses that, while that does not encompass this—meaning the first and second [teachings]; 3. Each strictly encompasses the other in essence—meaning the final and sudden [teachings].
