此上兩對意云：小聖真智尚不能親到小聖之理，況凡心劣於前智，真覺又超前理，轉轉懸隔，何能造耶？如百寮尚畏宰相，百姓豈親天子？此正同《金剛經》，四果之人尚無心言：我證得四果，豈如來有定法得阿耨菩提耶？

The import of these two pairs above is: even the true wisdom of the lesser sage cannot personally reach the principle of the lesser sage; how much less can an ordinary mind, inferior to that former wisdom, [reach] true enlightenment which further transcends that former principle? Being further and further apart, how could it reach it? Just as all the hundred officials still fear the prime minister, how could common people draw near to the Son of Heaven? This is exactly the same as the Diamond Sūtra, where persons of the four fruits still do not think: 'I have realized the four fruits'—how then could the Tathāgata have a fixed Dharma by which he attained anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi?
