即所照也。寂寥虛廓，了無情塵。亦可照體清淨，是覺之相，非關能所，但以初悟能所未忘，故云相也。此正同善財初遇文殊，表信智見其身相。後見文殊，表證智不見身相。

This is that which is illuminated. Tranquil, vast, and completely free from emotional dust. It can also be that the essence of illumination is pure, which is the characteristic of enlightenment; it is not concerned with subject and object, but because upon initial awakening subject and object are not yet forgotten, it is called 'characteristic'. This is precisely the same as Sudhana first meeting Mañjuśrī, symbolizing the wisdom of faith seeing his bodily characteristics, and later seeing Mañjuśrī, symbolizing the wisdom of realization not seeing bodily characteristics.
