Seeing a dream within a dream, one successively realizes the previous error, and only upon waking is what one sees real; hence it is said thus. Having "nothing to depart from" has two meanings: first, merging with true enlightenment, true enlightenment cannot be departed from; second, arriving within true enlightenment, there is naturally no illusion from the preceding successive stages that can be departed from. Hence Heze said: "When delusion arises, one awakens; when delusion ceases, awakening ceases; when both awakening and delusion cease, that is tathatā."
