Exclusively severing external conditions and resolutely having no intention to violate them is called 'firmly upholding'. Guarding the sense gates and restraining body and speech is called 'prohibitive precepts'. Although categories of precepts are many, they are subsumed under three clusters: first, precepts of restraint; second, precepts of accumulating good dharmas; third, precepts of benefiting sentient beings. Here the intention is to speak of the precepts of restraint, but the meaning extends to the other two. Precepts of restraint refer to the ten inexhaustible precepts; to take the essentials, they are just the four major offenses. When these four are pure, all branches and leaves do not arise.
