Yet empty space, separated from consciousness, is also not truly existent. Hence the Śūraṅgama-sūtra says: 'If even a single person brings forth the true and returns to the source, the empty space of the ten directions all at once dissolves away.' This means that obscured by deluded emotional attachments, one sees emptiness where enlightenment is. Once the dust-like reflections dissolve, emptiness was originally enlightenment. 'Manifested' means that as emptiness dissolves, enlightenment appears; 'developed' means that as delusion is exhausted, the mind opens. Looking at it from either perspective, both are without boundaries. The Śūraṅgama-sūtra also says: 'When hearing returns, the organ afflicted by cataracts is removed; when dust dissolves, enlightenment is perfectly pure. When purity reaches its utmost, light penetrates everywhere; quiescent illumination contains empty space. Looking back upon the worldly realm, it is just like an affair in a dream.' From this we know that when both emptiness and existence are thoroughly severed, there is only the enlightened mind, alone and brightly illuminating, its spiritual knowing unclouded.
