Directly in relation to the faculties and dusts, without taking the meaning of generating consciousness or pulling the mind, one directly takes the substance of the four great elements. The Ratnakūṭa-sūtra says that each of the four great elements is twofold, namely internal and external. The two of the earth element: internal refers to the solid parts within the bodies of oneself and others, namely hair, nails, and so forth; external refers to the solid parts existing outside the body, namely soil, wood, and so forth. The two of the water element: the moist nature inside the body, tears, sweat, and so forth; the moist nature outside the body, rain, dew, and so forth. The two of the fire element: the hot substance and hot mark inside the body capable of digesting food and drink, etc.; the hot substance and hot mark outside the body capable of ripening crops, etc. The two of the wind element: the wind substance inside the body—wind is named 'swift,' abiding in the four limbs, etc.; the wind substance outside the body, moving, turning, etc.
