Within the gates of the six faculties, the three of faculty, consciousness, and dust each have their distinct boundaries, and also because it has the meaning of cause and the meaning of lineage (gotra). The preceding is the six sets of two; one who understands rests from the causes of karma. Here it is the six sets of three; contemplating it remedies grasping to a self. Combined with the five aggregates, they complete the three categories. The Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna traditions without exception rely on these to explain all meanings. The previous discussion of falsely identifying the four elements as body and mind, and saying that they are combined internally and externally, precisely constitutes the meaning of the five aggregates; hence it is omitted here.
