The four continents, four destinies, four dhyānas, four formless realms, non-conceptual [heaven], pure abodes, Brahma King, and the six desire [heavens] constitute the twenty-five states of existence. These are all 'existence,' each evaluated according to actual retribution, not being subsumed by correct wisdom. However, the Brahma King is in the first dhyāna, and non-conceptual [heaven] and the pure abodes are in the fourth dhyāna; the reason these are specifically listed among the stages of the four dhyānas is that the Brahma King possesses views, the non-Buddhists have non-conception, and the pure abodes belong solely to noble ones, being distinct from other heavens.
