First, the four [applications of] mindfulness: First, contemplating the body as fivefold impurity—namely seed, dwelling place, self-characteristic, self-nature, and ultimate culmination; second, contemplating the three feelings as entirely suffering—namely suffering, pleasure, and neither-suffering-nor-pleasure; third, contemplating the mind as impermanent from thought-moment to thought-moment; fourth, contemplating all phenomena as devoid of self. These counteract the four inversions of ordinary persons. Furthermore, contemplating the body as ultimately empty; contemplating feeling as empty internally and externally; contemplating the mind as having nothing existent; contemplating dharmas as mere designations. These counteract the four inversions of the two vehicles.
