The purity and defilement of lands are entirely due to one's own mind: while the kalpa burns for sentient beings, my land is secure and tranquil. The two appearances seen by Śikhin and Śāriputra were not the same: when the Buddha pressed the ground with his toe, the jewel adornments and sitting upon the lotus were no different. How much more so when the mind merges with the nature of enlightenment, and consciousness and wisdom have no arising! Body and land rely on the real, defiled and pure both vanish, opening up to the dharmadhātu, pure and clear. 'Fully' means fully pervading empty space; 'encompassing' means containing the three periods of time. The three periods of time are vertically exhaustive; empty space is horizontally universal.
