Light is that which is grasped by the direct perception of the visual consciousness; therefore it has neither hatred nor love. The Śūraṅgama states: "The eye gazes around, merely like a mirror without making any analysis, while your consciousness sequentially designates and points within it." Saying "the eye" takes the visual consciousness as its intent. Saying "your consciousness" refers to the mental consciousness. It may also simply accord with ordinary worldly view, taking the pupil of the eye to be light, just as the Lotus Sūtra states: "King Brahmā is the father of sentient beings."
