There are two aspects to the secret: First, the secret store of the Tathāgata, meaning the vision and knowledge of the Tathāgata of the One Vehicle. Because the Buddha remained silent about this essential point for a long time within the approach of the gradual teaching, it is called the ultimate expedient means. Below, the answer stating, "Wondrous enlightenment, shining in complete perfection, is free from flowers and cataracts," etc., refers to this. Second, the Tathāgata is himself the secret: because of realizing the secret store in which subject and object are non-dual, the instruments of his three modes of action are all secret. The secret of body means manifesting form where there is no form, like a maṇi jewel, etc.; the secret of speech means expounding the boundless ocean of teachings in a single word, like an echo in a valley, etc.; the secret of mind means accomplishing tasks without discursive thought, etc. Between the two meanings, the sūtra clarifies what has been realized.
