如雪山捨身、香城破骨之類。儒典尚令竭力事父、致身事君，何況為法？故《大乘四法經》云：「諸苾芻盡壽，乃至逢遇喪命因緣，必定不得捨善知識。」

This is like [the Bodhisattva] relinquishing his body in the Snow Mountains, or crushing his bones in the City of Gandha (Fragrance). Even Confucian texts enjoin serving one's father with all one's strength and dedicating one's life to serving one's ruler, how much more so for the sake of the Dharma? Therefore, the Sūtra on the Four Dharmas of the Mahāyāna says: 'Bhikṣus, to the end of your lives, even should you encounter circumstances in which your life would be lost, you must never abandon a good spiritual friend.'
