This directly clarifies being without doubt. For a bodhisattva's manifestations and skillful means are difficult to fathom; one should simply rely on the teaching and not doubt their outward traces. Do not emulate sincere devotion merely because of conforming conduct, nor let pride and arrogance arise upon seeing non-conforming conduct. Therefore, the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* (*Dazhidu lun*) says: 'Regard your teachers and masters as you would the Bhagavat. If there is someone who can expound and explain the profound meaning and untie the knots of doubt, bringing benefit to oneself, then respect them with your whole heart and do not dwell on other flaws. Just as with a worn-out bag holding jewels, one must not refuse to take the jewels because the bag is bad. And just as when walking a dangerous road at night, an unseemly person holds a torch, one must not refuse to take the light because the person is bad. A bodhisattva is also like this: obtaining the light of wisdom from a teacher, they do not take their flaws into account.' However, being a teacher is difficult, and being a disciple is not easy; do not take this admonition as a pretext to wrongly contend with coarse individuals. If you wish to test truth and falsity, discriminate as explained before; having already understood their path, comply and honor them in this way. Furthermore, this medicine treats disciples; teachers must not mistakenly take it. Taking it increases sickness, and there is no medicine that can cure it. Using fetters to untie fetters is impossible.
