Just like fire being hot, water being wet, and so forth—the distinct natures of each. Nowadays one sees a type of person who says: 'Let delusion follow delusion, let truth follow truth; each fits its own nature, why should one change or alter them? Actions are also left to action; loving leisure is left to leisure. When meeting hunger one eats, when meeting clothes one wears them; good things and bad things are not known at all; acting as things roll along, living by trusting conditions. When sleep comes one lies down, when inspiration comes one walks; east, west, south, north, what fixed departure or stay is there?' This defect is due to the earlier statement: 'Perfect enlightenment is pure and fundamentally has no cultivation; one relies on the illusory power of un-enlightenment to cultivate.' Missing that text's intention, they claim they are already enlightened, so why should they perform illusions? Thus it becomes the defect of laissez-faire.
