The former [defect] rushed around seeking the Buddha; this one abandons body and mind to indulgence. Even if one is unconstrained by good or bad, this is merely called the nature of the morally indeterminate (*avyākṛta*). How could the Seven Sages [of the Bamboo Grove] be the Great Way? How could the Four Greybeards [of Mount Shang] be holy sages? They are still blind to the desire heavens, how could they merge with the body of enlightenment? When practitioners reach this point, they drown in water and sink their boat; they should take warning themselves and not be tainted with this defect. Therefore it was said earlier: 'If one does not cultivate, but always abides in illusion, how can there be liberation?'
