2.1078

前但止息心念令寂，此則計於身心、根塵本來空寂。又前不妨見有根塵，但不隨念愛染，故云止息。此則於根塵亦無，堅持空寂之相，由見空無，故云除滅。

The former merely stopped mental thoughts to make them tranquil; this one calculates that body and mind, sense faculties and sense objects, are fundamentally empty and quiescent. Furthermore, the former did not prevent seeing the faculties and objects, but simply did not follow thoughts with craving and attachment, hence it was called 'stopping'. This one takes faculties and objects to be non-existent as well, firmly clinging to the mark of empty quiescence; because of seeing emptiness and non-existence, it is called 'extinction'.
