Now the substance of enlightenment is spiritual and luminous; it is not merely quiescence. Now, putting an end to delusion and abiding in quiescence—how could that correspond [with enlightenment]? Furthermore, perfect enlightenment is neither dynamic nor static, blending both dynamic and static together; its wondrous functions, numerous as the sands of the Ganges, are unimpeded and inconceivable. How could a mind abiding in quiescence tally with it? In words it seems close, but in principle it is entirely estranged. Because it is contrary to principle, it is called 'not [the mark of quiescence].'
