Third, distinguishing the mind of serving a master. This responds to the third question regarding 'what kind of practice to perform.' Hence the heading states 'one who wishes to cultivate,' and concludes 'cultivating in this manner.' However, it speaks solely of serving a master without any other practice; therefore this heading is assigned to represent cultivation. That is to say, the gates of bodhisattva practice originally have no fixed traces; they adapt to the events of the time and the varied capacities. One need only serve a luminous master well, and the luminous master will personally instruct according to the situation. This is also like Sudhana, who, having given rise to the bodhicitta at the abode of Mañjuśrī and heard of bodhisattva practice, was not told everything in detail by Mañjuśrī; instead, he was merely instructed to draw close to good friends.
