Setting aside its length or brevity, there is no special symbolism. In the Vaipulya sūtras, the minimum is seven days; longer periods are not prohibited. Next below, the ritual practice is formally clarified. According to the Sūtra on the Method of Worshipping the Buddha Spoken to Vimalaprabhāmati Bodhisattva, there are eight layers in total: 1. making offerings, 2. praising the Buddha, 3. prostrating to the Buddha, 4. repentance, 5. entreaty, 6. rejoicing, 7. dedication of merit, and 8. generating vows. Here it is abbreviated to only two: worshipping the Buddha and repentance. Yet although the text is brief, the practice must be performed completely. The Treatise also states: "One should diligently worship the Buddha, repent, entreat, rejoice, and dedicate merit, constantly without rest; one will thereby escape all obstacles and one's roots of goodness will increase." The Huayan also enjoins paying homage, praising, offering, repenting, and so forth.
