This is worshipping the Buddha. Using the name to invoke the substance, one contemplates and worships it. According to the contemplation approaches of worshipping the Buddha by Tripiṭaka Master Ratnamati, there are seven grades of superiority and inferiority: 1. worship of conceit; 2. worship of singing in chorus—these two are not proper ritual; 3. worship of reverent respect, where respect arises from the heart, is expressed through body and speech, and the five points touch the ground; 4. markless worship, penetrating deeply into dharmatā and free from the marks of subject and object; 5. worship of activating function, contemplating body and Buddha as both arising from conditions, like illusions and shadows, universally employing body and mind to worship all everywhere; 6. internal contemplation worship, worshipping only the true Buddha of the dharmakāya within one's body, without focusing on other Buddhas; 7. dharmatā worship, where internal and external, ordinary beings and Buddhas, are identical in the one dharmatā—to see a Buddha as worshippable is itself a wrong view, whereas contemplating the true mark of one's body and contemplating the Buddha in the same way is called equal worship. Hence Mañjuśrī says: "Because there is neither arising nor ceasing, / I pay homage to that which has no contemplation," and so forth. The latter four kinds of worship all belong to contemplation practice: the fourth is the emptiness contemplation worshipping the Buddha of ultimate truth, because it enters the nature of dharmas; the fifth is the provisional contemplation worshipping the Buddha of conventional truth, because it activates function from substance; the sixth is the middle contemplation worshipping the Buddha of the primary-meaning truth, because it does not cling to emptiness or form, directly beholding the true nature of original enlightenment; the seventh is the three contemplations in One Mind worshipping the Buddha of the three truths in one realm, because it neither grasps the true nor discards the provisional, being completely extinguished with nowhere to abide. Since the present sūtra is within the gate of conforming to marks, it corresponds for now to the third and fifth forms of worship. The rest are found below under abandoning marks to gather the mind.
