然建道場，或在伽藍、或於餘處，期限未滿，夏首已臨，入眾安居則乖誓約，作念結夏又雜觀心。道場中人由此疑惑，如來遠念故為辨明。為俗乖律即非，因大廢小無失，故《決定毘尼經》云：「持聲聞戒是破菩薩戒，持菩薩戒是破聲聞戒。」

However, when establishing a bodhimanda, whether in a saṅghārāma or in another place, if the time limit is not yet complete and the start of summer has already arrived, entering the assembly for the retreat would violate one's vows, while making thoughts to begin the summer retreat would also mingle with the mind of contemplation. Practitioners in the bodhimanda have doubts because of this; the Tathāgata, having distant concern, therefore clarifies it for them. Violating the Vinaya for worldly matters is wrong, but abandoning the Lesser [Vehicle] on account of the Great [Vehicle] is without fault. Therefore the Upāliparipṛcchā-sūtra says: 'Upholding the śrāvaka precepts breaks the bodhisattva precepts; upholding the bodhisattva precepts breaks the śrāvaka precepts.'
