勅令依此名義而持。謂已悟者文性離而持法，未悟者無離文而持義，是奉持之相也。然答奉持之問者，若以文顯，則不妨因說經名，承其文勢便於此答。若以義求，則在後頓、漸門中。

He commands that they uphold it according to these names and meanings. That is, for those who are already awakened, they transcend the nature of the text and uphold the Dharma; for those not yet awakened, they do not depart from the text and uphold the meaning—such is the mark of upholding. However, as for answering the question on upholding: if considered in terms of the text's surface, then taking occasion from expounding the sūtra's names, relying on the momentum of the text, he answers it conveniently here; if sought in terms of the deeper meaning, it lies in the sudden and gradual gates below.
