四、答功德，文三：一、以施寶校量顯聞經勝，意明其福，以福校量故。二、以度人校量顯說經勝，意明其智，非智不能度人故。又聞者假令不解，亦生其福；說者必無不解，故唯智也。三、以宿因反驗，顯信經勝，雙明福智。

4. Answering about the merit. The text has three parts: first, by weighing against the giving of treasures, revealing the superiority of hearing the sūtra, intending to clarify its blessings, because it is weighed in terms of blessings; second, by weighing against the deliverance of people, revealing the superiority of expounding the sūtra, intending to clarify its wisdom, because without wisdom one cannot deliver people (moreover, even supposing a listener does not understand, it still generates their blessings, whereas an expounder is necessarily not without understanding, hence it is strictly wisdom); third, by retrospective verification from past causes, revealing the superiority of having faith in the sūtra, clarifying both blessings and wisdom.
