（宗密）慶以天幸，竊稟和尚華嚴疏文雖乖禮足，且解生焉。（宗密）恨以累有事故，不獲早赴起居，下情伏增惶懼。既未繫目，敢自陳心，若不粗述本緣，寧表誠素？欲書實語，恐塵瀆視聽。進退無已，伏惟照恕幸甚！

[Zongmi] rejoices in heavenly fortune that, having covertly received the Upādhyāya's commentary on the Huayan [Sūtra], although I was unable to bow at your feet, understanding was nonetheless born. [Zongmi] regrets that owing to repeatedly having obligations, I have not been able to come early to inquire after your health; in my humble feelings, fear and trepidation are redoubled. Having not yet met your gaze, I dare to express my inner heart: if I do not roughly relate my original conditions, how could I display my sincere intentions? Wanting to write true words, I fear defiling your sight and hearing. Advancing and retreating without end, I humbly hope for your illuminating pardon and am exceedingly fortunate!
