[Zongmi] thought that all treatises and commentaries were merely like this, and thereupon rested my mind from transmitting the teaching, traveling freely in wandering. Relying solely on Master Zhongnan's contemplation gates as auxiliary conditions, and taking departure from sentiment and compliance with wisdom as my own strength, I dwelled by illuminating the fused and interpenetrating dharmadhātu, pointing to the profound discourse on phenomena and principle for the benefit of others. With a dreamlike body and mind I roamed the world of reflections; my spirit was immersed in the wondrous realm, and my wisdom traversed doctrinal gates. Journeying across rivers and mountains, I arrived at Xianghan, where at Huijue Monastery I met Ācārya Lingfeng, who was a wise disciple under the Upādhyāya's gate. Having been bedridden with illness for several months, he had gradually reached an extreme weakness. Within three days of meeting, our sentiments had just opened to one another. Wishing to share the bond of kindred spirits, the sūtra as well as its commentary and subcommentary were all bestowed upon me. Before our discussions were concluded, he suddenly passed away. This was indeed enduring death to wait for my arrival out of past Dharma affinities; all who saw or heard of it could not but sigh in amazement.
