[I, Zongmi,] having had the great fortune from past lives to plant roots of goodness together [with you], have encountered such a sūtra and met with such a commentary; previously, before this royal feast, I did not dare partake at once. Now, having obtained clear text to confirm and resolve [my doubts], my mind and intentions are serene, and I vow to propagate and elucidate it life after life to the end of my days. At that time, I was immediately requested by the assembly of monks and nuns to praise and expound it, in order to review and practice it myself. Yielding in vain to their request, I merely recited along with the text; how could that suffice to enlighten others? Because the perfect tradition was revealed, many were amazed and clapped their hands. There were those with deep-seated capacities and firm seeds who, upon hearing it, immediately received and upheld it; from beginning to end there were several tens of people who vowed to study and practice. Because the text of this commentary is profound and wondrous, its transmission is not in vain; how could my petty ability have induced such a response? Having finished lecturing in Xiangyang, I went temporarily to the Eastern Capital to pay homage at the stupa of the Patriarch, intending then to hasten forward to pay you my respects. Because the summer retreat was pressing near, I stayed temporarily at Yongmu Monastery. The disciples from Xiangyang gradually sought me out and invited me again for a second series of lectures. Hearing this sūtra once more, I agreed to the assembly's request, promising that once I finished the commentary on the preface, I would proceed to the Upper Capital. Just on the seventh day of this month, when it concluded, an auditor, Taigong, cut off one arm, saying: 'I rejoice in encountering a Dharma so profound, wondrous, and inconceivable; to express my utmost sincerity, I vow to cultivate and learn it.' This is due to the Venerable Master's virtue in the Way pervading everything, so that the commands of the teaching are about to be put into practice. That a branch of the tradition under your gate should possess such ascetic determination! He severed his limb, breaking sinews and bones, yet was entirely free of pain or distress, his countenance remaining serene. From the beginning until now, his body and mind have been as before; both monks and laypeople marvel at it without exception. The efficacy of contemplative wisdom has manifested in clear response. At that time the Censorate investigated and verified it, and the facts were distinct and clear. The Regent, revering the great scripture, has already reported it to the Secretariat-Chancellery. According to his original intent, how could he have wished to publicize it fully? Yet the doorway of inspiration also depends on public recognition. Since his hand wound is not yet healed, the government office issued an official dispatch instructing the monastery to attend to his recovery, so he cannot travel yet. Because of this, my paying respects has been further delayed; my humble feelings cannot bear it, and I prostrate myself with increasing trepidation. I respectfully send the auditor-monks Xuan’gui and Zhihui ahead to present this explanation. [My, Zongmi's,] talent is petty and my speech clumsy; my understanding is difficult to convey. I humbly beg for your compassion, specially granting me acceptance, which would be my great fortune. Incompletely written by your disciple, [Zongmi,] submitting this with a hundred fearful bows.
