Xuan’gui and Zhihui, having attended the Author of the Huayan Commentary for this lecture, have returned, and I have respectfully received your compassionate instruction. Accepting my petty awakening and permitting me to join the ranks of your Dharma assembly, I receive it upon the crown of my head and uphold it, overcome with joy and awe. I am deeply ashamed of my crude disposition, having not yet exerted any toil, merely offering a modest mind, yet receiving acceptance from afar; I am surprised by my good fortune, and my joy turns to tears. I am humbled by your compassionate vow, broad and deep, bestowing such excess grace. Once confirmed and resolved by you, I suddenly feel radiant; students of our stream advance in their practice, and peers of our time increase their reverence. It is my great fortune. [I, Zongmi,] wished immediately to rush forward to attend upon you, but because Taigong's arm wound is not yet healed, he is cautious of wind and dare not brave the road; weeping repeatedly, he wishes to attend and travel with me. Pitying his bitter ordeal, I cannot bear to leave him behind. I humbly pray you will look upon this with understanding. Incompletely written by your disciple, [Zongmi,] submitting this with repeated bows.
