The substance of the self is fundamentally non-existent; it exists solely because of the mind. Since the mind is impermanent from thought to thought, the self also arises and ceases thought by thought. Therefore the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says: "This body is like lightning, for it does not abide thought by thought." The Treatise [on Awakening of Faith] says: "All sentient beings are not called enlightened, because from the beginning their thoughts have continued in succession; therefore it is called beginningless avidyā."
