Although awakening to motion being stillness itself, in order to counteract the habit of disturbance and confusion, one settles the mind single-mindedly in a quiet realm, gradually practicing so as to attain accomplishment. Not grasping at phenomena is 'adopting stillness.' Que says: 'When the enlightened mind is first established, its strength is still feeble; in principle, one should adopt stillness and composure, and only then can its illuminating power expand.' The Treatise says: 'If one cultivates śamatha, one should abide in a quiet place, sit upright with correct mindfulness, and not rely on breath, form, space, earth, water, fire, wind, seeing, hearing, perceiving, knowing, and so on; one should know that it is only mind, with no external realms,' and furthermore this mind is without own-marks, and so on.
