The intent of the question here is not to say that one was originally deluded altogether; the intent clarifies that since one already knows that the nature of enlightenment is consummate and luminous and all dharmas are pure, how is it that the ordinary mind is still present and does not unite with the source of enlightenment? What one does is still marked by affection, aversion, and love; self and other are completely distinct and difficult to blend into one, differing as far as heaven and earth when compared to those at the fruit stage. If the enlightened mind is originally pure, upon awakening one should be identical; what further dharma defiles it, causing our mental application to differ from that of the buddhas? Hence he says, 'By what are they deluded, bewildered, and unable to enter?'
