"The nature of phenomena" is the nature of all dharmas. If one directly discusses the original essence, it is named the nature of enlightenment. If one examines the differentiated dharmas to their end, none has an intrinsic essence and all are identical to the one nature; then it is named the nature of phenomena. Now, investigating and breaking down the four marks opens and merges all dharmas to become entirely identical with the nature of enlightenment; hence it says 'open and enlighten us to the nature of phenomena.' While previous sūtra passages only spoke of 'the nature of enlightenment,' only this passage speaks of 'the nature of phenomena'; the intention lies here.
