This is an analogy for a practitioner who dwells at leisure in a quiet room or hides deep in the mountains, his mind having ceased worldly affairs and his environment having neither adverse nor agreeable conditions. Becoming accustomed to leisure as his nature, he momentarily forgets worldly sentiments and is unaware of self and other, considering this to be the realization of no-self. If pressed by adverse or agreeable conditions, a mind appears as if from nowhere; since the mind is not yet tranquil, only then does he realize that the self exists. Hence, below it says: 'If someone praises or slanders his teaching, joy, anger, and the like will arise.'
