When hot water melts ice away, they together become the same water. There is no longer any knower that knows its disappearance. This conversely clarifies that since this karmic wisdom illuminates the preceding three marks until they are completely exhausted, the disease of the self is still not exhausted. It is like the ice: if it were to say, 'I am exhausted,' this very ice that speaks of exhaustion is precisely not exhausted. If matched in detail: water is an analogy for the true nature; ice is an analogy for the four marks; hot water is an analogy for wisdom. Boiling water is called hot water; an awakened mind is called wisdom. Thus it is said that water freezes to form ice, and one turns around to boil water to melt it: when ice and hot water are both exhausted, the wet nature alone remains. This is an analogy for the mind being deluded to form a self, and one turns around to awaken the mind to dissolve it: when self and wisdom are both exhausted, the body of illumination stands alone.
