If a thief is outside, one can still guard against him; if one raises him as a son, how can one be vigilant? Furthermore, knowing a thief is a thief, the thief can do nothing; mistaking him for a son, how could one avoid ruin? This is an analogy for the six sense-bases seizing objects being still restrainable, whereas the false self in the storehouse consciousness (ālaya-vijñāna) is difficult to distinguish. Therefore, the jewel of merit in the tathāgatagarbha degenerates and wanes thought after thought; hence being destitute, it is difficult to gather merit and wisdom.
