夫生死輪迴本自憎愛，欲求解脫，須盡二源。今愛涅槃還是本愛，今憎生死亦是本憎。棄苦、欣樂雖殊，憎愛元是本習，帶之修道，佛果豈成？伏我愛根為涅槃者，由伏之故不起，不起之相似涅槃相，以似為真，故云爾也。

Transmigration in saṃsāra originally stems from aversion and attachment; if one wishes to seek liberation, one must exhaust both sources. Now, loving nirvāṇa is still original love; now, hating saṃsāra is also original hate. Although renouncing suffering and rejoicing in bliss are different, aversion and attachment are originally former habits; carrying them while cultivating the Way, how could the buddha-fruition be accomplished? 'Suppressing the root of self-love as nirvāṇa' means that because it is suppressed, it does not arise; this non-arising resembles the mark of nirvāṇa, and mistaking the resemblance for the real is why it is spoken of thus.
