This is the active manifestation (samudācāra). When meeting objects, it arises, continuing in succession. Speaking generally, it means that by confronting external objects, one verifies that the inner mind's self-grasping is still firm, subtly hidden and continuous. Although the army of prajñā has mobilized repeatedly and the hordes of Māra have been frequently crushed, the master of the fortress of ālaya is difficult to assault; manas constantly attends it, guarding it strongly; the mental consciousness (mano-vijñāna), as the planning minister, manages the internal and external, overseeing from the side the generals of the five consciousnesses to garrison the gates of the six sense-bases. Thus the master thief frequently roams about, constantly stealing passwords, bewildering our Dharma King, frequently invading borders, and disturbing our sphere of contemplation. Although outwardly fearing prajñā, hiding by day and moving by night, inwardly it harbors avidyā, unbroken day and night.
