Practicing while carrying disease, they therefore increase their diseases. Stated conversely, practicing in accordance with reality only increases real virtues. Just as medicinal herbs and the like have seeds that are sweet or bitter, what is nourished by water and soil only increases each [according to its nature]. Bitterness is an analogy for taking the mark of a self as the basis; sweetness is an analogy for taking pure enlightenment as the basis; water and soil are an analogy for the myriad practices.
