The definitive teachings that accord with principle preached by the Buddha all state that mind and objects are fundamentally empty, affliction and karma are fundamentally pure, ordinary and holy are not different, and cause and effect are both complete. Seen from the perspective of the Buddha, the principle is truly like this. Yet sentient beings have long been deluded and inverted, with habitual tendencies rooted deeply; even if they believe and understand the Dharma gates, their present functioning still originates from following thoughts. Merely using the discriminative mind and consciousness to interpret his unimpeded verbal teachings, they claim: 'The Buddha's intention is merely like this.' Since the mind is itself thought, it is unaware of thought. Not knowing that tacit realization and entry differ from the believing mind that accords with faith, they grasp at the Buddha's discourse on equality and cannot sever defilements to seek realization. Therefore the sūtra confirms: 'They will never achieve success.' The Avataṃsaka also says: 'Like a poor person counting another's treasures,' and so forth.
