Samantabhadra's intended question states: 'The nature of enlightenment is fundamentally complete, and everything is like an illusion. Illusions are empty and devoid of substance—who then speaks of practice? If one does not cultivate practice, by what cause does one realize enlightenment?' The Buddha explained that dependent on the arising of illusory wisdom, all illusions are eliminated; when illusions are exhausted, wisdom vanishes, and the mind of enlightenment is completely luminous. However, those who nowadays speak solely of emptiness and illusion drown in non-cultivation, while practitioners bind themselves to having attainment. Truly, because the meanings of awakening and cultivation appear contradictory yet coincide, they are most difficult to comprehend, and their principles must be determined.
