The retreats of the Lesser and Great [Vehicles] have, in brief, eight differences: first, difference in what is relied upon—a distinct boundary versus perfect enlightenment; second, difference in provisional and real—definite reality versus manifestation; third, difference in maintenance—phenomenal marks versus dharmatā; fourth, difference in binding the retreat—face-to-face ritual action versus reciting one's name alone; fifth, difference in accomplishing the retreat—the body not exiting the boundary versus the mind not giving rise to thoughts; sixth, difference in failing the retreat—the body crossing over the boundary versus a thought arising contrary to the origin; seventh, difference in returning to the boundary—the body not exceeding the time and boundary versus thoughts not being interrupted and being enlightened; eighth, difference in what is expected—the fruit of arhatship versus unsurpassable bodhi. Having these eight differences, it therefore says 'not relying' and 'in order to cultivate', etc. 'Great causal conditions' carries the sense of not being bound by minor details.
